The three tiers

Stock cabinets

Pre-built in standard sizes, off the shelf. Cost: lowest. Lead time: days to weeks. Quality: varies widely — good stock lines are genuinely solid; cheap ones are particleboard with a short life. Best for: straightforward kitchens, rental properties, budget-focused projects where the layout is standard. With good installation and hardware, stock can look and function beautifully.

Semi-custom cabinets

Factory-built with size, finish, and option flexibility. Cost: middle. Lead time: weeks. Quality: generally strong — better construction than most stock, more sizes than stock allows. Best for: most of our kitchen projects. The sweet spot of choice, quality, and cost.

Custom cabinets

Built to order for your exact space, any size, any configuration, any finish. Cost: highest — often 2–3x stock. Lead time: longest, often 8–12+ weeks. Quality: the best available, when the shop is good. Best for: unusual spaces, specific design visions, homeowners who want exactly what they picture with no compromises.

Our honest take

Most kitchens do not need custom cabinets. Semi-custom hits the quality and flexibility most projects require, and good stock works fine in straightforward layouts. We recommend custom when the space demands it — odd dimensions, specific storage needs, a design vision stock cannot deliver — not as a default upsell. And regardless of tier, installation quality matters as much as the box: level runs, proper anchoring, tight scribes, clean trim.

What to look for in any cabinet

The hardware upgrade

Knobs and pulls are the cheapest visual upgrade in cabinetry. Even keeping existing boxes, new hardware transforms the look. When we install new cabinets, we fit hardware straight, consistent, and adjusted — the detail work that makes it look professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are custom cabinets worth it?

When the space demands it — unusual dimensions, specific needs, exact vision. For most kitchens, semi-custom delivers the quality and flexibility needed at much lower cost.

What is the difference between stock and semi-custom?

Stock comes in fixed sizes off the shelf; semi-custom offers more sizes, finishes, and options from the factory. Semi-custom costs more but fits more kitchens well.

How long do custom cabinets take?

Often 8–12+ weeks from order. Stock can be days; semi-custom typically weeks. Lead time is part of the project timeline we give you in writing.
